PSP Hackers at it again with PSP 3.71 M33

The PSP hacker team M33 has been at it again with releasing a reverse engineered version of the 3.71 SONY firmware for the PSP. This means that I will be upgrading my M33 installation guide in a few days after I have time to do the upgrade myself. I do not want to rush it, because I have bad experience with rushing things. The new release brings along the new features that SONY added, but also a few more original ones:

  • Now uses 3.71
  • VSH Menu is not longer launched using HOME key, but using SELECT now. This is to not interfere with the XMB function of home, which is now more useful in this firmware.
  • Psp Slim: umdcache was allocating memory even when homebrew was launched, wasting memory that homebrew programs may want to use. Now umdcache module is stopped before it can allocate any memory, only in the case homebrew is launched. Also, memory is unprotected for user memory usage by M33 core (only when homebrew is launched). Developer, for a sample of how to use the extra , see the extra ram sample of the M33 sdk.
  • Both version boot now from 3.XX ipl, and are independent of 1.50.
  • The main installer will not install 1.50 kernel anymore. A 1.50 kernel addon for 3.71 M33 that will install inside 3.71 M33 will be released in a few days (for fat only)

However the most exciting piece of news that came with this release is the revelation of the lead hacker. It’s none other than Dark_Alex himself, who was supposed to have retired earlier this year.

There are also a few important items to notice:

  • Due to some changes in kernel nids by Sony, you can expect a lot of kernel plugins not working anymore.
  • A fat PSP with 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4.

    […]A fat PSP with 3.52 M33-3 or 3.52 M33-4[…]

This sure isn’t a very clear ending to the text. 🙂

How about something like… “A fat PSP with 3.52 M33 patch 3 or 4 is required to install the new custom firmware.”?

PS. I’m on a school PC now, so my IP might appear different to you. I’ve also changed my name from “xpand” to “XpanD”.

I’m gonna try to make a Pandora today or tommorow. Just bought myself a nice 3600 mAh battery, so that I can convert my old official Sony battery to Pandora.

Look forward to seeing your Pandora guide. I’ll be surprised if it’s better than the guide I’m currently using, although I do think you can make a good one too.
